The 3 Things You Must Know to Nail a Photoshoot

1. Lighting

Photography literally translates to drawing with light. Lighting is hugely important when it comes to the technical success of a photoshoot. The best times to shoot are usually early morning or sunset because the light isn’t as harsh. If you are shooting in the middle of the day (when the sun is harshest), try to find shade where you subject is evenly lit. If you nail the light at the front end of production, it will be easier to select and edit the images you want to use in post-production.

If you are modeling, pay attention to where the light source is. Decide if you want to be directly lit (facing the sun) or back lit (sun behind you).

2. Posing & Camera Angle

How you pose and where the camera is in relation to you can drastically change the mood and look of your photo. Are you short? Have your photographer shoot you from a low angle, where your legs are closer to the camera. Anything closer to the lens will appear larger and longer. Did you know I’m only 5’4”? I have camera angles to thank for appearing taller.

Practice different poses in front of a mirror before getting on set. Know the angles that make you feel confident and express that to your photographer. The more you practice, the more comfortable you will become in front of the lens. More on this to come.

3. Purpose

Lastly, the most important factor is your purpose. Go into your photoshoot knowing what you want your message and intention to be. What do you want to SAY and WHY do you want to say it? When you go into a shoot with purpose, I promise things will feel more effortless while you’re there. Using this methodology, you will minimize trial and error, and in doing so, you will make creative content with value. Your connection with your audience will be more than surface level - and that’s how you develop trust as you’re building your brand!
