12 Empowering Books on Baby Goode’s Bookshelf

Quigs here!

I have always been such a bookworm, diving into multiple books at the same time. I’m really hoping to pass that gene onto the baby! Books have the power to start conversations, introduce important lessons, and change the world. That’s why I have handpicked every single book that has found a home in his library. I’m ready to go on the many journeys and lessons written on these books’ pages, and today, I am sharing some of those empowering stories that live on his bookshelf.

1. Pink is for Boys by Robb Pearlman

Life isn’t color-coded. To us, the only things that matter are that our children are healthy and happy. This book encourages people to express themselves with all the colors of the rainbow while redefining traditional gender roles.

2. Super Duper You by Sophy Henn

Emotions are sometimes complex, especially for our babes. Travel through these rhymes that validate all feelings because they’re what make us super duper. The illustrations will also make you smile - guaranteed! I have a feeling this will be a quick favorite for us.

3. Little Legends Alphabet Book by Beck Feiner

Children have the power to change the world! Alphabet Legends has so many fantastic educational books, but this one stuck out to me. While learning his ABCs, he’ll also discover the little legends that changed the world in a BIG way!

4. Animal Rescue by Patrick George

A picture is worth a thousand words. This wordless book lets your tot be the hero. By flipping the transparent pages, they can save the animals and learn the importance of protecting both domestic and wild animals - firsthand!

5. Boy Oh Boy by Cliff Leek

A slightly older read, it highlights the powerful and revolutionary men of history. From Frederick Douglas to Prince, each story reframes modern-day masculinity through the men who played a role in its new definition.

6. Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly

This incredibly true story follows the four black women who helped NASA send the U.S. into space in the 1960s. Overcoming racial and gender barriers, these women should be known by children and parents alike. Another older read that Mommy will definitely enjoy for the time being!

7. Feminism is for Boys by Elizabeth Rhodes

It might be a short story, but it still packs a punch. When feminism is successful, all genders benefit. Equality is a movement everyone should be an advocate for, and I’m excited to teach that lesson to Baby Goode!

8. Peanut Goes for the Gold by Jonathan Van Ness

If you don’t know who Jonathan Van Ness is, you should. His first children’s book tells the adventures of Peanut, a gender nonbinary guinea pig who is not afraid to be who they are. It’s a sweet tale with an even more powerful message!

9. Courageous People Who Changed the World by Heidi Poelman

This board book I know I’ll be reaching for a lot. It’s a wonderful intro to some of the world’s major game-changers, and the adorable images make the stories fun for your little one.

10. All are Welcome by Alexandra Penfold

The story follows a young classroom, full of different cultures and backgrounds. As they play, learn, and grow side-by-side, it’s a beautiful reminder that we should uplift and celebrate one another.

11. Tomorrow I’ll be Brave by Jessica Hische

I’ve always believed that we hold the power for our future. Through gorgeous calligraphy, the message tells little ones that tomorrow is a new day, bounding with endless opportunities. They are ours if we decide the day is ours!

12. No! My First Book of Protest by Julie Merberg

This book is a celebration of protest movements and their major players (like Cesar Chavez, Martin Luther King, and Malala). The imagery is engaging, and I have no doubt he’ll love shouting “NO! NO!” along to the story. An added bonus? There’s a mini cheat sheet of activism throughout history for us parents to stay educated as well!

What are your children’s books recommendations? Tell me in the comments!
