Crushing on Velvet
Ok, let's be real. If you were born in the late 80s/early 90s, chances are at some point, you had a deep, un-wavering desire to grow up to be a Spice Girl. You most likely fantasized about owning a Jeep Wrangler, and quoted "Clueless" like it was your own personal life story. Whether you liked it or not, the 90s had a distinct style, and it influenced us all in one way or another.
When I was in the fourth grade, my friend Tiffany and I decided we were going to be fashion designers. Tiffany’s mom, Cheryl, knew how to sew, so we had an automatic leg up in the industry. We went to Jo-Ann fabrics and got some crushed velvet and decided to make the clothes that we wanted to wear (but Gap Kids and Limited Too didn't carry). We made skirts and drawstrings pants and matching clothes for our teddy bears.
Fast forward 20 years, and crushed velvet is BACK. It holds a very special place in my heart, and although I never became a fashion designer, I'm still a lover of fun trends and get extremely excited about clothes. Trends move in a cyclical pattern, they come and go and ebb and flow… and it's always interesting to see how they resurface and reinvent themselves. I've seen a lot of crushed velvet this holiday season, in all different types of silhouettes… and it's not being limited to one body type. It's pants and dresses and sweaters alike!
XCVI has me feeling SUPER festive in their new crushed velvet pieces. Check it out below! I'm feeling like I actually DID grow up to be a Spice Girl, and I'm not mad at it one bit!
